How do we work?
The following information is general in nature and covers most circumstances. More detailed descriptions of our specific programs are listed under the “Specific Programs” section of this web site.
Exercise
1. Consultation
The first step in the exercise rehabilitation process is an exercise consultation. At this meeting we find out about your medical condition(s), the problems and concerns that this/these cause(s) for you and, most importantly, what you would like to achieve by getting in to a regular exercise program. The length of the consultation is 30 minutes.
You should bring with you any blood test results, x-rays and other similar test results, and your letter of referral from your medical practitioner. You will be required to fill in a registration form before you see us, so try to arrive a few minutes early.
Call our rooms at St John of God Medical Clinic on 9366 1810 to arrange an appointment.
2. Exercise Prescription
Following your consultation the next step is the exercise prescription. We believe in making things as simple as practicable- but no more so. It might be that your exercise prescription will be as simple as do more walking or more complicated requiring a range of different exercise to deal with a specific problem.
If your exercise prescription involves special stretching or other exercises and, in addition to being instructed on how to perform these exercises, we provide you with an illustrated program of these exercises.
3. Exercise Testing
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the leading world authority on exercise and health has identified the following reasons for exercise testing:
- To provide objective information about health-related fitness status and to compare this information with others of the same age and sex;
- To provide information which is useful in formulating exercise prescriptions;
- To collect baseline information to allow us to compare “you with you.” This tells us whether your exercise program is doing what you want it to do;
- Providing information which motivates individuals to exercise/continue to exercise;
- Assessing risk of cardiovascular disease.
Talk to us if you are interested in undertaking exercise testing.
Nutrition
